Universal Foundation Expands Hospitality Training with New Student Cohorts

Universal Foundation has expanded its tourism workforce development programme with the launch of two new hospitality and culinary cohorts, alongside the graduation of students who completed the previous training cycle.

Hospitality Batch 8 and Culinary Batch 3 of the Discover Hospitality Programme were inaugurated during a ceremony held at the Islamic Centre Conference Hall on 8 July. The event also marked the graduation of Hospitality Batch 7 and Culinary Batch 2.

Introduced in 2017, the programme is intended to prepare young Maldivians for employment in the hospitality sector through a combination of academic instruction and workplace training. More than 150 students have participated in the programme to date.

Its scope was expanded in 2024 through the introduction of the Culinary Certificate III qualification, providing a separate training route for students seeking careers in professional kitchens.

Participants undertake theoretical classes at Villa College before completing a four-month internship at properties managed by Versa Hospitality, formerly known as Universal Resorts. Universal Foundation covers the cost of the programme, while trainees receive an allowance from Versa Hospitality during their placements.

The programme’s structure is designed to connect classroom learning with operational experience at tourism properties, giving participants exposure to current industry practices and workplace requirements.
